Dildology: a proclaimed scientific organization falsely alarms public with disinformation

  • Product material is incorrectly identified and misclassified by ECA lab and Dildology; yet presented as fact
  • ECA lab analysis lacks depth and sophistication; results are misinterpreted and misrepresented by Dildology blogger / owner

All details supporting these points are below.

A letter from the owner of Doc Johnson, regarding Dildology’s purported laboratory analysis of the James Deen Realistic (R5®) Cock:

In their post here (http://wiki.dildology.org/view/James_Deen), Dildology.org’s hobbyist owner, Valentine Orenda (under the alias ‘Protospect’), presents a laboratory analysis on the Doc Johnson James Deen Signature Cock made in Realistic (R5®).

In the identification fields, the sample material is incorrectly named and identified – it is listed as “DocJohnsonUR3”, when in fact it is R5®. The lab used, Expert Chemical Analysis (ECA), has misidentified the sample they tested.  The James Deen dildo is not manufactured in UR3®. Our UR3® formula contains no PVC or plasticizer.

Our Realistic (R5®) formula  is a PVC blend. This proprietary formula is made with the same plasticizers used in cardiac catheters, blood bags, and medical devices worldwide. This plasticizer is approved for use across the globe. See links and notes on these regulations and irrefutable compliance below.

Doc Johnson switched to non-phthalate plasticizers four years ago, long before many of our competitors and by choice, not by law.  We use two different materials: 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, di(2-ethylhexyl) ester and/or 1,2-Cyclohexane dicarboxlic acid, diisononyl ester. Neither of which are phthalates.  Both have a very clean toxicological profile and is neither an estrogen mimicker, carcinogen, nor anti-androgen (i.e., an endocrine disrupter.)

We have a full laboratory onsite at our North Hollywood facilities, and employ a Scientific Director, Timothy Crawford, who works full-time onsite, as well as two lab assistants. We have stringent testing and quality control in the making of our formulas and the continued compliance of our materials.  We do not take this defamation and inciting of public outcry lightly. The damages done to our company’s reputation in the last few days by this misinformation is unacceptable and undeserved. Additionally, the personal attacks directed at James Deen are deplorable. James Deen has stood behind his product line with Doc Johnson and has been a great partner.

The Dildology website is in error.  It is a common mistake made by non-scientists who do not have a working knowledge of polymer chemistry. The ECA testing lab used by the website found bis(2-ethylhexylhexahydrophthalate) which could, to the layman, appear to be DEHP. This misinterpretation and lack of deeper analysis speaks to the competency of the laboratory used.

It is also important to note that we have cradle to grave testing on our materials. That means we have the testing on the raw materials, the intermediate stage, and our final goods. All of which show that our products do not contain phthalates.

Our most recent testing battery was completed on March 20th, 2013 by Bureau Veritas, an accredited laboratory approved by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for third-party testing under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA.)  Their test method for the determination of phthalates is either CPSC-CH-C1001-09.3 and/or GB/T 22048-2008. As prescribed by the protocol, our Realistic material was tested down to 0.005% with no sign of any phthalates. This includes DNOP, DINP, DIDP, BBP, DBP, DEHP and DnHP. The protocol stops at 0.005% because any level lower than that is non-reportable.

Our accredited testing Labs:

Our non-phthalate plasticizers satisfy the following regulations and standards:

  • JHPA – Japanese Hygienic PVC Association – Approved
  • EFSA – European Food and Safety Authority – Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011
  • BfR – (German Federal Institute of Risk Assessment) recommendation
  • Chinese GB Standard 9685-2008
  • Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XVII, 51/52 – Toy Safety
  • Satisfies requirements of EN-71-3, EN 71-5 and EN 71-9
  • Satisfies requirements of Directive 2007/47/EC – Medical Application
  • Complies with standard ASTM F963
  • Complies with Oeko-Tex Standard 100 in all classes

Ron Braverman and the Doc Johnson team

Greetings from Australia and the Adultex tradeshow!

News from Australia! Our Founder and CEO, Ron Braverman, won the first ever Lifetime Achievement Award at AdultEx! Presented by Calvista CEO, Michael Bassett, the award represents a career in manufacturing, product design, brand establishment and excellence in the adult novelty category of consumer packaged goods.  The crowd cheered loudly for Ron during this presentation.

We had a booth at the tradeshow, and the response from attendees was great.  Our Director of Sales – International, Greg said: “School of Doc, The new Vac-U-Lock packaging/ program, Wonderland and Mood/ Rock Star displays were very well received with overwhelming enthusiasm. We also focused on Made in USA items, with special promotions on male masturbators (All Star Porn Stars, Pocket Pals, Palm Pals), Noches Latinas, Vibrating Classics, Crystal Jellies and Softees.  The responses to the Vac-U-Lock tri-fold supplement catalog and video, the Wonderland video and the SOD pamphlets/ holders was just phenomenal.  Attendees loved that we were taking our service to the next level with extended retail and end-user support.  Nearly every Calvista customer requested School of Doc materials and links to the Vac-U-Lock/ Wonderland videos. The show was very strong and busy..  The tradeshow was alive with activity and we had nonstop visitors to our booth.  Fortunately, I had help from local adult retailer shops.  Marinda and Bridget were brought in by Calvista to assist me in running the booth.” The show featured a big Fetish party on Day 2.  And Day 3 was moderate in attendance and activity as the show wound down to a close.”

January 2012 ANME and XBiz Shows, that’s a wrap!

14 Jan

We’re back from the big January shows! I have to tell you guys…we really made a big splash this month with our awesome mega-booth at the AMNE show and the XBiz Retail Expo. The main crowds at these shows are retailers and distributors, both domestic and international; they were delighted by our 100+ new Doc Johnson products on display, including several full lines and new display units. It was so exciting to FINALLY unveil all of the goodies we’ve been working on for months and months!

Our COO, Chad Braverman, was pleased with the show feedback: “We were thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive response we received at ANME and XBiz Retail. WonderLand had a powerful impact and was certainly the talk of the show. We saw great reactions to our new Black Rose light BDSM line and for the revamped Vac-U-Lock packaging. The insights of the industry are invaluable to us; there is so much to be learned by the first impressions and comments as we show our newest products to our customers.”

The new offerings include the sophisticated Black Rose line of light BDSM products and the revamped packaging for the famous Vac-U-Lock harness systems, for which the Doc sales team received glowing feedback. A newly refreshed School of Doc series of educational pamphlets were debuted to much fanfare from retailers and distributors alike; all five colorful pamphlets and the playful holder are ready to ship and are free of charge. The School of Doc makes education easy and fun for both staff and end-consumers, giving overviews on everything from materials to vibrators and lubricants.

Above all, the new WonderLand massager line was indeed the talk of the trade show, with many attendees falling quickly in love at first sight. The five distinct WonderLand massagers are made of body safe silicone, and feature 10 intense functions, push button controls, and a waterproof design. At the ANME meet-and-greet, the buzz started with the Doc Johnson staff appearing as characters related to the fantasy theme of WonderLand. The excitement didn’t stop until the booth was taken down, and the pre-order numbers demonstrated the strong response.

“The recently concluded ANME show was an overwhelming success for Doc Johnson. The response to our January collection was beyond expectation and resulted in a record number of pre-orders,” says sales manager, Greg Holdridge. “The newly launched Wonderland line is simply amazing, and the in-store support will redefine merchandising.  Our couples-friendly light BDSM line, Black Rose, was a hit for the look, quality, and excellent pricing. With additions to our staple brands, such as Platinum, Mood and GoodHead, we focused on category expansion in a proven format.  The newly repackaged Vac-U-Lock line boasts a new ‘it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3’ marketing campaign to support the even easier to understand color-coded numbering artwork treatment – a dream come true for retailers and consumers.”

Rounding out the tradeshows was the 2012 XBiz awards, with Doc Johnson’s beloved CEO, Ron Braverman, receiving the ‘Industry Pioneer’ XBiz Award. Presented the award by his son, Doc Johnson’s COO, Chad Braverman, the crowd hung on every word of Ron Braverman’s moving acceptance speech.

On receiving this honorary award, Ron Braverman, Founder and CEO of Doc Johnson, said: “It’s an honor to be recognized by my peers as a pioneer in this industry. I have spent most of my life building a business that has maintained a leadership position in manufacturing adult products right here in America– it hasn’t always been easy. Doc Johnson has grown over 35 years to now employ 500 people and house facilities that occupy over 250,000 square feet – nothing is more validating than coming to work every day and seeing my vision realized. This is proof that hard work and quality products can truly make a company prosper. I am excited about the future of Doc Johnson; we have a diverse and talented team of people that I have cultivated over the years. Vital changes are being made in my company, and across the industry as a whole. It’s an invigorating time for all of us.”

A new look for “Made in the U.S.A”

13 Sep

We recently saw the cover story on the current issue of Dwell Magazine  and it got us thinking about how many American companies rushed to outsource over the last 2 decades and how the renaissance that Dwell is praising is something that never changed for us. We make 75% of our full product line right here in the USA.  And that is A LOT of product, folks… to the tune of about 5,000,000 total pieces a year, on average. 5 Million! And making those products means keeping about 500 people at Doc Johnson employed. Which? Is pretty damn awesome.

October issue of Dwell

So, how can you tell if one of our (5 million…oh come on, it’s impressive!) products is ‘Made In The USA’? It’s easy – we label them. We’re big on transparency. We actually just updated the label’s design and made it a little more modern – and here’s a sneak peek at our new version:

The new label. You like?
